Why an International Event? An international event creates a higher level of awareness of the issues surrounding the journey to and from school, and at the same time provides an opportunity to share expertise and promote best practice. For many parents around the world, the car has become the main means of transporting children to and from school. Convenience, work commitments, safety concerns and general changes in lifestyle in a growing economy are just some of the factors influencing their choice of travel mode. The proportion of journeys to school made by car has increased considerably in the last several years, with the knock-off effect being a gradual decline in the numbers of children walking to and from school on a regular basis. The general themes that are promoted during IWALK include: increasing daily physical activity, improving safety, enhancing the environment, reducing levels of crime, developing community cohesion, promoting social interaction and reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools. International Walk to School Day wins prestigious international award 
On June 5th, 2002, the 30th World Environment Day, the International Walk to School project was awarded the Stockholm Partnership for Sustainable Cities Award from his Majesty, the King of Sweden, at a ceremony in Stockholm City Hall. IWALK was among 14 winners representing innovative solutions for sustainable development in metropolitan areas from thirteen countries around the world. The winners of the Stockholm Partnership for Sustainable Cities Award were selected by an international jury. In all, over 220 development projects from 53 countries submitted entries to the Partnerships Programme. Together, they represent a 'knowledge base' for the urban innovations useful to cities all over the world. In February 2004 the Stockholm award arrived in Ontario, Canada, for a brief visit, and was presented to Morton Way Public School at a school assembly on February 26.
